Artologie would like to congratulate Artist Rebecca Herrington for a fabulous submission result in the Summer Exhibition 2024. After posting excitedly on instagram about her preliminary round inclusion Rebecca was contacted by The One Show to track her journey. She is one of several artists they are following with RA submissions this year. Rebecca was filmed opening the email and celebrated with her family and 'H' from steps.

Rebecca Herrington is a photorealist artist with a fantastic eye for detail, her oil paintings convey mixed focus and challenge the observer with their upfront seductiveness. The paintings look at shadow and light and have a startling contemporary colour and vibe. Rebecca works from her own photography, she has been exhibiting at Artologie since the beginning of this year when she produced the most beautiful rose paintings coinciding with Artologie's 'Love art' window for Feb.

Several beautiful paintings by Rebecca are currently sharing wall space in a mixed exhibition at Artologie and are worth a visit. In particular her painting 'Still life with Narcissus Papyrus' has captured lots of attention and is currently available online. Congratulations are well deserved.

In a further nod to Valentine’s Day, and specifically love, (yes, we are going all out in a lovely way), we have invited our artists to look at the relationship they have with their art and how love inspires them. Essentially, we have asked them to pop on some heart shaped glasses, and write about loving their art.

A bit of old school glamour in the gallery.

As a part-time musician turned artist, Goldy approaches his art as if he were writing song lyrics for a musical album. In this analogy each individual track is created in support of the other tracks on the album, the combination of which results in a carefully choreographed vibe pulsing through the album. The same is true for this collection of Goldy’s carefully curated collages.

His art is bold, dynamic, and provocative. Its Pop Art, it’s all in the genre! And we love it for its distinctive, and humorous, exposé on modern life.

Goldy’s pop art is illuminative. It takes a poignant look at current society in a distinctly intriguing and unusual way. His focused use of colour, mixed media, and juxtaposing images, adeptly brought together in collages of seemingly disconnected elements and events, uniquely portray the crazy and often very disengaged world that can be, the 21st century.

Do not worry, Goldy is not trying to make any strong controversial political statement with his art. Rather he hopes observers will catch the irony, comedy, and theatre of each collage. If his art provokes the observer to ask what it makes them feel and think, then Goldy has fulfilled his creative objective. Ultimately, he likes his art to make the observer smile.

This collection Goldy created between 2019 and 2022. He lovingly refers to it as “Difficult Second Album” (an obvious link to his past local band playing days). The collection is a collaboration with his partner Jëssika and spotlights one of three different subjects, placing them in irregular surroundings. The fun really unfolds when you realise that the building/ construction elements he has used in each of the collages are local architectural structures, which we frequently ignore due to their mundaneness.

If, like the artist, you grew up in the local area, we look forward to seeing if you can spot where Goldy has included images that you will have often walked past without giving a sideways glance. Is that Oathall Community College, or is it Venice Beach, LA (darling!)? You be the judge. The palm trees might be swaying, but the artist was firmly rooted (or ‘locked down’) in Haywards Heath.

Whether Pop Art is your thing or not is irrelevant with this collection. We warmly invite you to come into the gallery and observe these works of art for yourself. Perhaps you will be transported out of your comfortable artistic appreciation place (yes, we think this is a thing!) and notice how colour and arrangement can give a completely unfamiliar perspective to otherwise unremarkable places, objects and situations.

Or you may want to take advice from Freddie Mercury who once said: Modern paintings are like women, you'll never enjoy them if you try to understand them.

We look forward to welcoming you into Artologie for a bit of lovely fun soon.

Destroyed: A beautiful display of thousands of sunflowers swaying gentling in the breeze in a field in East Chiltington has been razed.

Ok, you are probably thinking we are being overly dramatic for effect and yes we are, as currently it is only a representation of this stunning summery scene, painted by one of our much-loved artists Grant Dejonge, that has been destroyed by fire, and by Grant burning it himself we hasten to add, but as we wanted to get your attention we hope you will forgive the dramatics.

So why was Grant inspired to burn one of his paintings, which he recently did on ITV News? In short, he did it in protest.

Sadly, this field, which is in an area that regularly inspires Grant’s paintings, is part of a much larger site that has been earmarked for obliteration by a new town development proposal. If approved the rural countryside would be lost forever, covered over by the proposed new urbanisation.

In burning his vibrant painting of one of the fields in jeopardy, Grant hopes to raise public awareness of the proposal, which in summary would see the current owner of the farmland, Eton College, selling the plot to developers to build a new medium sized town of over 3,200 homes, (for perspective, that is about the size of another Hassocks). This would involve bulldozing 400 acres of quintessential rural Sussex farmland bordering the South Downs National Park wiping out the individual identity of the distinct tiny villages of Plumpton, East Chiltington and South Chailey in one 20-year build-time swoop.

Grant hopes his protest will provide strikingly visual impetus to all who see or hear about it to lend their support to the campaign to stop dead in its tracks this appalling development scheme. Artologie is extremely pleased to be able to help this campaign by displaying Grant’s protest art in our window. The theatrical and unusual nature of this painting certainly is attracting much attention from those passing by. It will be with us until early September when it will then go on display in the Half Moon pub at East Chiltington. It is for sale, and anyone interested in bidding for it is invited to register their interest via our gallery email

Well known for his bold modern expressionist landscapes, Grant masterfully paints with the aim of catching a moment in time and translating it through a vibrant display of colour and brush strokes onto canvas. His paintings effortlessly draw the viewer in to that specific instant, enabling them to also experience and delight in the moment’s natural perfection. We believe that no one will be able to avoid smiling as they look at these painting.

This is certainly how we feel about our newest artist to join the Artologie artistic team, Sarah Hillman.

Sarah is a ceramicist of immense talent, in fact we think she is outstandingly good, so good that for now you will have to take our word for it as we sold all our initial range of her beautiful pieces before we even had time to post a blog about them.

Sarah crafts contemporary sculptured pieces from clay and underlying the observer’s initial perception of their simplicity, lies a dramatically clever story of almost gravity defying hand cut curved structures that Sarah then cleverly takes one step closer to brilliance through her masterful use of colour juxtaposition: pure smooth matt white exteriors almost hiding strikingly bold and vibrant mono-coloured interiors. Light and shadow obviously play important roles and as you can imagine, seeing is believing.

This artist might be described as “ahead of her time” by some visitors to Artologie, but Naomi Munuo is definitely an artist currently on a massively positive popularity trajectory and we at Artologie are delighted to exhibit some of her work as well as call her a personal friend. (Wendy and Naomi studied together at art college a few, (or was it a few plus some?), years ago and have remained friends ever since.)

Naomi loves colour and is not afraid to use it in bold and abstract ways in her paintings. To be correct her work falls into the genre of modernist abstract, and if she had been a student of Picasso’s or Matisse’s, we think she would have made them proud. This artist is gaining significant momentum and recognition ( her exhibition list is extensive) and most recently been selected to exhibit/ sell her paintings in Liberty Department Store on Regent Street in central London.

Naomi comes from a very talented pedigree and the figurative sculptures from her father Bradley Holland often feature in her paintings. Her mother, Ann Holland is a colourful abstract painter and their studios are in France. They formed the Munuo / Holland Artist group a few years ago. Naomi’s use of texture and mixed media harp back to her training at St Martins College London, where she studied fashion design, with her work often alluding to a playful connection with her earlier career in fashion and textiles.

Naomi is far from a signature artist painting in only one style and on one form. She also works in pastels, paper, acrylic and collage on canvas, but all her works sing loudly with colour and would brighten up any wall in any period of home. She takes something ordinary (anything from a vase to… say a tiger) and transforms it into something beautiful with her understanding of colour and shape, eloquently bringing the naivety (or innocence) of the object to the fore by slightly off shaping it. She really has a very special talent and unquestionably we have her on our “one to watch” list.

We love that she is exhibiting at Artologie. Her works that we currently have in include 'Maranta Plant with Spotty Cloth' and 'Maranta plant with Fish' Come in and see them for yourself, and whilst visiting, why not ask Wendy what artist she has on her walls in her home?

The sun is out…which makes is a great time to buy art. We hope to see you at Artologie soon.

We at Artologie feel very privileged to exhibit works by the extremely creative and talented, Caroline Wright and this May we are thrilled to be exhibiting several new pieces created by Caroline during the last lockdown.

Caroline is an abstract painter, who takes inspiration for her art from the natural coastal landscapes by her Sussex seaside studio. Her studio looks out at the sea across the pebbles – and is a source of ever changing beauty. Her use of acrylic paint under a high gloss resin enables Caroline to create pieces that superbly reflect the movement of the waves and their interaction with the seascapes right outside her studio door.

Caroline’s pieces are fun, bright and contemporary and she has become very popular with visitors to the gallery since she started exhibiting with us in 2019. Her paintings are just as suitable in modern interiors as they are in more traditional spaces where an injection of colour and a reflection of movement is desired.

Originally from this area, Caroline was delighted to see No 18 High Street renovated into Artologie and we are thrilled that she is a regular contributing artist to the gallery. Caroline remains a frequent visitor to the village with family still living in the area and her memories of shopping on the High Street as a little girl are still very dear to her.

It is a joyous time for the gallery currently: restrictions have been eased so we can have visitors inside the gallery again: the sun has been making a daily appearance and the sky has been stunning us with joyous shades of blue. The bluebells are lighting the woods and if that wasn't enough we have new paintings to celebrate in the gallery.
How we relish receiving new pieces from another of our much loved regular exhibiting artists, Karen Birchwood, and this May we are delighted to be exhibiting 3 new pieces by Karen, all which we think are outstanding.

Karen is not only a (selected) member of the Rye Society of Artists but has also been recognised as a talented abstract artist by The Society of Women Artists, with her works being sort after both nationally and internationally. Karen works from her studio in Sevenoaks, Kent. Her works are abstract, expressionist landscapes and seascapes often incorporating the rye grasses and flatter Kentish landscapes found along the coast, where she spends much of her time.

In each of these new pieces Karen has incorporated mixed media together with her creative subtle hue changes to suggest peaceful reflection along a coastal wilderness.

Since initially exhibiting at Artologie for our opening in May 2017, Karen’s work has been very popular, so to avoid missing out on seeing them in person, we hope you are able to visit the gallery soon.

Something that we always look forward to with great excitement at Artologie… new works by the extremely popular and gifted Jessica Ford, and this May we are delighted to announce we have two 1m x 1m signature size canvases by Jessica to shout-out about.

Jessica is a Brighton based abstract artist who has regularly exhibited at Artologie since we opened our doors in May 2017. She is very well known for her use of vibrant colours (love of pink) and her paintings grace the interiors of clients homes worldwide.

Jessica’s use of colour and shading techniques never fails to ignite great conversation from gallery visitors and 'Birch', currently hanging in our window, is proving to be no exception. Her second painting 'Ren' on display inside the gallery has her signature style block divisions in pink and turquoise. Come in soon to see for yourself, the colours are truly uplifting and like all Jessica’s work, they will not be available for long.

It’s Bluebell season (aren’t they magnificent this year!) and what a treat for us at Artologie to have a delivery by our very dear artist, Grant Delonge.

Grant, who is very much a seasonal landscape painter, was so captured by the beauty of this year’s bluebell display that he was inspired to paint ‘Bluebells in a birch wood’ (36cm W x 55cm H) currently on display in our window. This piece captures the yellow light and spring leaves dancing on the surface of the canvas reflecting the glory of bluebells below.

We are also delighted to have another two stunning sunrise paintings of Grant’s inspired by the spectacular views from Novington Lane in East Chiltington. Both pieces capture a moment of brilliance; the golden red colours of early morning, hinting at the possibilities of the day ahead.
We are so happy that long winter lockdown is now done, and we have been allowed to reopen the gallery thanks to the government’s easing of COVID-19 restrictions that took effect on Monday 12th April. And if that wasn’t exciting enough… the sun is out!

To borrow what has become perhaps a rather overused phrase over the past year …

            It was what it was

and somehow, the nation got through it. Our thoughts and well wishes go out to all those who have suffered, struggled, given so much of themselves for the greater good, been inspirational, been helpful, coped. Thank you and well done!

We are filled with excitement as we embrace the gloriously liberating fact that we can now have visitors inside the gallery again, albeit socially distanced, limited numbers at a time and everyone in masks, but still… Oh happy day!

All art galleries need people, and Artologie is no exception. We thrive on people and the conversations shared with our visitors, the inspirations they take away with them after spending time browsing, chatting, and enjoying being immersed in our vibrantly colourful space.

We warmly invite you to visit the gallery to see what we have on offer. You are welcome to browse, and to chat with Wendy about any pieces you like or find interesting. There are new pieces by all our regular artists as well as new product lines. We also have a new layout to the gallery. Remaining true to the building’s original occupant, a Victorian butcher’s shop, we enlisted the help of local, highly skilled independent joiner, Martin Western, to build our new dividing screen in a style that we think even the original butcher would have been delighted with. The wonderful positive to result from this new (required) installation is that there is now a dedicated artist studio space for Wendy. Who doesn’t love a win/win!

During lockdown, like many artists, Wendy immersed herself in the art of … being an artist again and as a result has produced a collection of intricate drawings and floral inspired paintings. She has also designed a range of bespoke stationery. Not only are they a wonderful display of her talents, but she loved being able to spend time exploring techniques and styles and going back to her design training. All her new work is on display in the gallery and Wendy is looking forward to extending the range over the coming months.

For an uplifting, inspiring, refreshing outing in Cuckfield, come in and visit us at Artologie. We are fully open and very excited to see our old customers and to welcome new ones. Pop in for a shop or a browse and a chat; we are looking forward to seeing you.

Pandemic Creativity at Artologie

What to do when the gallery is closed due to a pandemic?

As tempting as watching boxsets on Netflix might have been, Wendy threw herself into spending time being busy in her studio during the pandemic. Read on to find out what she did there….

Since creating Artologie and opening its doors back in 2017, Wendy found that her time was mainly spent immersed in and enjoying selling other people’s art. In her words on a recent Instagram LIVE interview with Roz from Tipperleyhill … “I am so lucky to spend my days surrounded by, talking about and selling such amazing art, created by such talented local artist” …, so nothing wasted, as they say! However, with significant periods during the past 12 months when the gallery was unable to open, the time pendulum swung in the other direction and Wendy was able to again delight in spending time designing and creating her own art. Throw in eye surgery to correct rapidly progressive cataracts and the results of her labours are even more astounding. Works include intricate pen etchings inspired by the local countryside around the gallery, the nature in her garden and Holly, her treasured Labrador. There was even time to pick up her paintbrushes and the gallery now has many bright floral paintings and cards, drawn from the glorious rural Sussex countryside found just beyond the gallery’s door.

Teapots and treasures, decorative china and little bottles. I have been collecting fabrics, florals and ephemera since I was a student and everything has a story! My ‘things’ are my visual memories and like many I am connected to these decorative items by place, time and smell. Ive been known to transport myself back to an evening out by reading a receipt left purposefully in a handbag last used ten years ago!

I’m not alone and while some may consider this collecting, 'hoarding', for me it is a part of the creative process. Now I am so content surrounded by familiarity, intentions and curiosities and have started to paint from them with a vintage feel which I have come to realise is an intrinsic style.

ecently I’ve been thinking about those postcards that were treasured , sewn, embroidered or painted and sent to someone to be kept, re read and maybe even framed if not placed carefully in an album. I wanted to paint snapshot moments of florals in oils and make them affordable and personal. These mini postcard paintings are a beginning and the teapots another story!

A GROUP of acclaimed artists from all over Sussex are staging an online auction to help make sure the county’s NHS carers have enough personal protection equipment in the battle to beat the coronavirus pandemic.
